The brief
Ten years of a system nobody could safely replace
Pipeline safety compliance is a domain where the software carries consequences. The record of what was inspected, by whom, and when is the thing a regulator and an insurer both rely on, and in an incident it is the first thing examined.
The platform doing that job was a decade old. Systems of that age accumulate workarounds faster than features: extra clicks, duplicated entry, steps that exist because of a decision made years earlier that nobody remembers. And the more steps a compliance task takes, the more often it gets done badly.
Every extra click in a compliance workflow is a small invitation to skip it.
The build
Rebuilding without losing the domain
The risk in replacing a ten year old compliance platform is that the accumulated oddities are not all accidents. Some of those extra steps encode a real requirement someone learned the hard way, and stripping them out uniformly trades one kind of failure for another.
So the work is separating the two: the steps that exist because the domain demands them, and the steps that exist because the old software did. Only the second category is safe to delete, and that is where the reduction in clicks per task comes from.
A note on sourcing. This project has no slide in the current portfolio deck and no page on the live site. The page is written from the Work page card copy, which is deck derived. It is worth a read by the delivery lead before publishing.
